Bridezillas need not Apply

I think brides get a bad name. I blame this on TV. They’re steroetypified as irrational, hysterical, demanding, spoiled brats who frequently display ridiculous theatrics. In my experience this is really not the case. I’ve met dozens of pleasant, beautiful, organized, and creative brides who have been a delight to work with. It’s really not fair to brides out there that a few bad apples are giving the rest a bad name. And I honestly think it’s silly that brides are almost being given permission to lash out at those around them by the example set for them on TV.

As I got my sweat on yesterday at the gym I saw a promo for an episode of the Anderson Cooper show on CBS. I was incredulous at what I saw. I even popped my headphones out of my ears for a sec so that Awolnation’s Knights of Shame wouldn’t drown out the good bits. Here’s the promo:

I searched in vain around the interwebz to be able to catch the full production of this show. I unfortunately wasn’t able to find it, but I think I learned enough from the promo. However, as I searched for the particular clip I was looking for, I just kept stumbling over more and more and more clips of outrageous bridal behavior. If you were to take the internet as a cue you might think this behavior was rampant. I don’t think that’s true, thank heaven! My theory is that shows like Bridezillas have given entitled and spoiled women everywhere permission to act like beasts and carry this behavior to new heights. I mean… if you’re terrible enough, you JUST MIGHT get on TV. And who doesn’t want that, right??? While, I agree that it makes for great TV, it doesn’t make for good life… and I’d even like to assert that it doesn’t make for a great marriage. I mean… would you want to be the man that’s stuck with that kind of nightmare behavior??

As I pondered this bride Alyssa on Anderson Cooper’s show I realized how blessed I’ve been with chill, relaxed, low maintenance, no nonsense, fantastic brides! I think that my personality attracts the kind of bride that wants to have a fun celebration of her love. Not the kind of woman that would demand her bridesmaids go through painful dental procedures in order to look good enough for her wedding.

So, consider this a PSA/Love Letter/Thank You Note.

  • PSA: I don’t do drama. I do nice, fun, cool, and relaxed.
  • Love Letter: I LOOOOOOOVE my brides. I think you’re fantastic and sweet and I can’t believe how many beautiful wonderful people I have met through my job. I’m so glad that you ladies have proven the TV stereotype to be hilariously wrong.
  • Thank You Note: Brides, thanks for being so cool! Thanks for giving me creative space, trust, and sharing your life with me. Thank you for going out of your way to recommend me to your cool, fun, relaxed friends. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I couldn’t be more blessed!

If you’re the kind of bride who enjoys drama and throwing tantrums, I’m probably not the photographer you’re looking for. But, I’d be happy to suggest some disorganized and unprofessional photographers to you so that you can get that extra bit of conflict I’m sure you’re looking for. (I kid, I kid…)

Share your favorite bridal horror stories below in the comment section. Tell me how you were able to keep your cool in the stress of your wedding. Tell me what you would suggest to other brides who are struggling to keep their demands in check. I’d love to hear what you have to say! Happy Friday!!

WCS: 6th Grade Musical- Music Man

The Music Man is a production that has always been near and dear to my heart. I loved watching the movie version when I was little. Then, when I was a freshman in college that was the production that Grace College put on. I auditioned and was given the role of one of the “Grecian Urn” ladies, but I wasn’t able to be in the musical because I took a job as a temporary choir teacher/long-term substitute teacher at Lakeland Christian Academy while they went through a staff transition. The choir job was better for me in the long run and gave me fantastic job experience, but… I REALLY wanted to be in that musical! In the end, I was asked to be the page turner for the piano player in the orchestra pit. I don’t mean to brag, but… I’m an AMAZING piano page turner. In college I was in high demand as a page turner. My timing is fantastic, I never miss a turn. I’m gooooood! (bizarre brag of the day) I was thrilled to have a FRONT ROW seat to all six performances of the musical. Then, as the show went on a small flirtation began with a certain clarinet player who sat directly across from me in the pit. That clarinet player eventually became my husband. Here’s a picture of him. Try and tell me you wouldn’t have made eyes at him across the orchestra pit, I dare you!!

I was SO excited when I was invited to shoot photos for Warsaw Christian School recently as their sixth grade class performed The Music Man. I love WCS, I love musicals, and I LOOOOOVE The Music Man. It’s a show that I know. I have all the songs memorized. I have fond memories that relate to this fantastic show.

It’s not all about me though. This performance was FAN.TAS.TIC! I mean… these are kids in 6th grade, and they pulled off the humor and tongue-in-cheek fun of this musical really well. I thought some of the lines might be beyond them, but they more than pulled it off. They NAILED it. It was great! Here are a few of my favorite moments from the musical.

“When the man dances, certainly boys! What else? The piper pays him!”

“We can be cold as the falling thermometer in December, if you ask about our weather in July!”

“Goodnight my Someone, Goodnight my Love”

“Seventy six trombones led the big parade, With a hundred and ten cornets close at hand”

“Pick a little, talk a little, cheep, cheep, cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more”

“Goodnight ladies, goodnight ladies, goodnight ladies, we’re going to leave you now”

“But, Professor Hill, We ARE Irish!”

“The Wells Fargo Wagon is a comin’ down the street”

“It could be something special, just for me”

“An anvil salesman?”

“Two Grecian Urns… and a fountain! trickle, trickle, trickle…”

“There were bells on a hill, but I never heard them ringing til there was you.”

“Let go of me you dirty rotten liar!”

“Think men, think! The minuet in G….”

Next year when the WCS Spring Musical rolls around you simply MUST go! It’s a great fun family night. You never know… you may be able to make eyes at a special someone.

WHS: Pops Show 2012

Today I’ll be posting a few highlights from The Wawasee High School Pops Show that took place this weekend. The show was fantastic! The pieces all had a TV theme and there were loads of comedic moments throughout the night, but also some really tender and sweet ones as well. It’s ALWAYS a fantastic show and I highly recommend that you go next year! It’s TOTALLY worth the $8.00 ticket price.

I want to tell a few people specifically how much I loved their work. Way to go Ashley, Tessa, Ben, Jessica, and Miranda!!! You guys ROCK!!!

There are many more photos HERE if you’re interested in seeing them all and ordering your own copies. The password is Pops$how.

Anthony & Tabitha: Wedding

Anthony and Tabitha are best friends, business partners, co-adventurers, and deeply in love with each other. They tied the knot this weekend in a one-of-a-kind pink and camo themed wedding. These two hunters took a lot of time personalizing their wedding and adding very unique touches to bring their two loves together: hunting and each other. I feel like I can’t really do this one justice with a description, so I’m going to let the photos do the talking. As Tabitha told me several times, “This won’t be like ANY other wedding you’ve ever been to.” She was right! But different is good.

Take a look at Anthony and Tabitha’s pink and camo wedding:

Tabitha looked RADIANT in her bridal gown.

These fellas spent their morning bow fishing. I asked them if they caught anything… I mean, hit anything… I mean, what do you say when you’re bow fishing? Here they are in their tree stands. This photo cracks me up!

Here are all the dudes: groom, groomsmen, ushers, and ring bearers. I tried to get one of them to sprawl on the hood of the vehicle for me, calendar style. They all made excuses about getting the wedding clothing dirty. Psh!

Here’s Tabitha’s main squeeze, the very handsome Anthony.

One of the flower girls was a little more focused on getting down the aisle than the other…. Adorable!!!

This bridal party was a blast!! I had a lot of fun with all of them.

This should prove how much I trust my clients and they trust me. I mean, I didn’t even bother asking if these were loaded. I trusted them not to kill me… Subtitle for this photo: Guns n’ Roses

These two are SOOOOOO cute together!!

I’ve never seen another wedding cake like this one!

Tabitha and Anthony’s first dance was completely choreographed. It was great! I had a hard time choosing photos for the blog because I had a couple dozen great photos of their first dance. It was really awesome!

When it came time for Tabitha to toss the bouquet she went up to the balcony to toss it down to the girls below. The flowers accidentally got caught in one of the chandeliers. Anthony gave Shelby a little boost to help her snag the bouquet from the lights. HILARIOUS!!

Anthony and Tabitha, congratulations on your fun and 100% personalized wedding. It was so fun!! I hope you continue to have many more amazing adventures together.

Busy, Busy, Busy….

Are you looking for something to do this weekend? I’m not! There are LOADS of fun things happening around town and I’m going to WAY too many of them. (But really, can you ever have too much fun?)

Here are a few things you might consider checking out:

The Warsaw Christian School 6th Grade Musical- This year the school is doing The Music Man Jr.

There are two Performances:
Friday, May 11 at 7pm
Saturday, May 12 2pm

Free Admission, but an offering will be taken so I think you should bring a couple nicely folded bills to drop in the bucket. It will be held at the Warsaw Christian School Gym; 909 S Buffalo St; Warsaw These musicals are often a ridiculously awesome combination of amazing talent and adorableness.

The Wawasee High School Pops Show- This year the theme of the show is TV! You can catch this show on Friday night, May 11th or Saturday night May 12th at 7:00pm in the Wawasee High School Auditorium. Tickets cost $8.00 TOTALLY worth it. I went last year and was blown away by the show.

Then, (this one’s by invitation only…) I’ll be headed to shoot Tabitha and Anthony‘s wedding this weekend. Tabitha is one of the most excited brides I’ve ever worked with. This couple can’t WAIT to get married.

And after that, we’re going to celebrate Mother’s Day with David’s family and share about Destiny Rescue with David’s home church. I hope to see some of our old friends there.

Obviously YOU are only invited to two of those four things, but there are a couple other things you might consider checking out… The Boathouse just opened their new bar. (over 21 only… obviously) On Friday night, Fair Fjola is playing a concert at the grand opening of The Lake House‘s new location.

And of course, you shouldn’t forget that NEXT weekend is the Fat/Skinny Tire Festival in Winona Lake and Warsaw. My husband’s band Sioux Ste. Marie will be performing at the Cerulean Garden Saturday night!! There’s LOTS to do and beautiful weather to do it in. I hope to see you out and about!
